Chapter Sixteen

I sucked in a sharp breath. My head whirled around like a rollercoaster. A demon? What? How much more complicated would this world get? I didn’t even want to pick at that thread right now. Ayana and Merlin were half demon? That would explain their immense power.

“Bet you weren’t expecting that, hey?”

“You could say. I...I don’t even know what to say to that. How?” I slapped a hand to my forehead. “Obviously I know how, I meant how did your mum not know he was a demon?”

“He disguised himself as a human man, charming, good looking, good job as a doctor, plenty of money and the promise of a good future. What woman wouldn’t be taken in by that?” He sat up and hugged his knees to his chest. “She said she knew the night she became pregnant. They’d been courting for several months, and he’d proposed. You know how it worked back then, everything had to be proper. They were married on June twenty first—the summer solstice. When they returned home that evening, they did the deed and in the morning, he turned to her and said ‘My job is done,’ then turned and left.”

My jaw dropped. “What?” I couldn’t even imagine how she would feel after that, poor woman. “How did she find out what he was?”

“The night Ayana and I were born, he came. We were born at eleven twenty-two in the evening, on the winter solstice, might I add. I came first and Ayana followed straight after.”

I frowned. “But she’d have only been halfway through her pregnancy by then?”

“Normal rules don’t apply when the dad isn’t human which Mum soon found out. As she lay in front of the fire, cuddling us and trying to get us to feed, he appeared right in front of her, just shimmered into existence out of nowhere, obviously presenting to her as her husband. She was frightened, of course, and he explained to her that she was the only woman capable of carrying this burden and that the world needed myself and Ayana in order to go forwards.”

“What did he mean by that?”

“There was a lot of chaos everywhere at that time. Every day was a struggle, not knowing if you’d survive to see another sunset or sunrise. He told her that his dark powers combined with her good powers had created two children who would inherit this light and dark and would have to work together to balance the world or send it plunging into darkness. He told her that Ayana had a light heart, and I had the black heart. We needed to mirror each other, like yin and yang, to prevent one or the other from going too much one way.”

I gasped, my thoughts immediately going to the baby, my evilly powerful, much younger sibling. Was I the light to balance out his darkness? And was his darkness to give my light a harder edge?

“I’m shocked,” I said, not really sure how to contemplate exactly what he was telling me.
